Allan Wilson sets out how Scotland’s young people can
showcase their vocational talents up to and beyond the WorldSkills 2011
competition.
FA
vision for how Scotland’s young people can showcase their vocational talents
up to and beyond the WorldSkills 2011 competition is being set out today by
Allan Wilson.
At a reception at Edinburgh Castle tonight, the Deputy Minister for
Enterprise and Lifelong Learning who was actively involved in the UK’s
winning bid for London to host WorldSkills 2011, will say Scotland is
well-placed to benefit from the competition and play an integral part in its
preparation and success.
WorldSkills brings competitors together from across the globe every two
years to compete and demonstrate their vocational competences in forty areas
from stone masonry to hairdressing to mechanics and everything in-between.
WorldSkills 2011 will put world-class achievement in skills alongside
world-class achievement in sport through the 2012 Olympics.
Ahead of the reception Mr Wilson said:
“We are delighted to be involved in preparations to host WorldSkills 2011 -
we have an exciting opportunity to present Scotland as a leader in
vocational skills and be successful in terms of competitors and medal
winners.
“Across Scotland, our colleges, employers and training providers already do
much to support skills competitions and promote excellence. Initiatives like
Modern Apprenticeships, Determined to Succeed and Skills for Work ensure
that we have the traditional and specialist skills that our businesses and
economy need to thrive.
“Vocational skills training and development is an important priority for the
Executive and as we develop our skills base as a nation we hope to reap the
rewards by performing well at skills competitions like WorldSkills.”
Held every two years, the first Worldskills Competition took place in Madrid
in 1950 as a forum for young people to demonstrate their vocational skills.
The last competition was held in 2005 in Helskinki, Finland with the next
event taking place in Shizuoka, Japan in 2007.
