Royal Mail is set to
deliver 30 Apprenticeships in Scotland after receiving funding from the
Scottish Executive through Scottish Enterprise.
Royal Mail has been running apprenticeships in England and Wales for 311
young people and is now rolling out the scheme throughout its sites in
Scotland. The Scottish Executive has contributed £75,000 to the project.
The Apprenticeship qualification has been developed with UK-based Skills for
Logistics. It provides candidates with a Scottish Vocational Qualification
(SVQ) Level 2 in Mail Services and is specifically aimed at employees
dealing with the collection, delivery and processing of mail.
Ian McKay, Director of Scottish Affairs with Royal Mail Group, said: “We are
very pleased that our Apprenticeship scheme will now be available to young
people in Scotland and I look forward to welcoming those young recruits
through our doors.
“Royal Mail Group is one of Scotland's largest employers, supporting
directly and indirectly around 1% of the Scottish workforce. We feel that
successful Apprenticeship and training schemes like ours will add to the
Scottish Executive and Scottish Enterprise's efforts to achieve their policy
goal of a 'Smart Successful Scotland’. I am also sure that this scheme will
continue to grow in our sites in Scotland."
Allan Wilson MSP, Deputy Minister for Enterprise and Lifelong Learning,
said: "It’s great to see Royal Mail offering this apprenticeship and
creating real opportunities for young people in Scotland. This strong
commitment to training from Royal Mail coupled with funding support from
Skillseekers will help ensure the talents of our workforce meet the needs of
our employers."
Royal Mail aims to use Apprenticeships to:
• Attract, develop and retain high-calibre postmen and women and managers of
the future.
• Improve the organisation’s retention rate and decrease absenteeism.
• Develop and increase a competitive culture at the front line.
• Improve workforce diversity in terms of age, gender and ethnicity.
• Encourage more people to consider a career in Royal Mail and by becoming
an employer of choice.
Dr Mick Jackson, Director of Skills Development at Skills for Logistics,
which will deliver the scheme for Royal Mail, said: “Skills for Logistics is
delighted that Royal Mail will be extending its Apprenticeship scheme by
delivering it in Scotland.
“With a focus on increasing the level of skills across the UK through
vocational training, it is important that employers are able to train new
recruits directly in line with the job requirements. Through the Mail
Services Apprenticeship individuals are offered a real insight into working
for Royal Mail by developing skills vital to the job they will be
undertaking.”
