MINISTER ANNOUNCES STRATEGY FOR CLEANER BEACHES - 19th March 2002

Environment Minister and local Labour MSP, Allan Wilson, has indicated the Executive’s intention to publish a Bathing Water Strategy to protect and improve the quality of Ayrshire Bathing Waters.

“Research and experience indicates that ensuring the standards of our bathing waters is a complex issue.  Some bathing waters are affected by pollution from a variety of sources, such as industrial processes, rainwater from built up areas and land use practices,” said Mr Wilson.

“A whole range of sectors potentially need to take action that will together contribute to the improvement of the environment generally and the cleanliness of our rivers and coastal bathing waters in particular.”

“So we propose to publish a Bathing Water Strategy which promotes coordinated action to supplement our major programme of investment in wastewater treatment with action to tackle diffuse agricultural pollution, industrial run off, nitrate vulnerable zones and climactic conditions.”

“The strategy will demonstrate the Executive’s commitment to carrying out our pledge to improve bathing waters.  By ensuring the good quality of our bathing waters we will not only improve the environment but also protect public health, promote recreation and our tourism industry,” said Mr Wilson.
