Executive to get tough with irresponsible fireworks vendors - 5th November 2002

Local Labour MSP and Minister for the Environment, Allan Wilson, has signalled the Scottish Executive’s intention to ‘get tough’ with irresponsible fireworks vendors.

“The Scottish Executive is in no doubt that the dangerous use of fireworks is becoming an increasing problem in Scottish communities and we are determined to use our devolved powers to get tough on people who set off fireworks in public places and retailers who sell fireworks to people who are under age or too far in advance of bonfire night” said Mr Wilson

“We also intend to work with colleagues in the DTI to implement stricter controls on a UK wide basis as the irresponsible use of fireworks can seriously affect people’s quality of life and cause at least inconvenience if not down right fear in the community.”

“Currently too many vendors are abusing the code of practice which I find highly disappointing. They have not been responsible enough to abide by the voluntary code and will now be subject to stricter controls.” said Mr Wilson.

“We will therefore, as a priority, examine other measures to control the sale and use of fireworks in conjunction with the DTI “ concluded Mr Wilson.
