MSP Meets With Roche Vitamins - 5th March 2002

Local MSP and Environment Minister Allan Wilson met with Roche Vitamins this week for a pre-arranged presentation on Waste Water Treatment and Water Charges at the plant.

“It was very much business as usual as far as both the company and I were concerned and we were both anxious to concentrate on the issues at hand rather than dwell unnecessarily on events elsewhere.” said Mr Wilson.

“The outcome of the sale or spin off option will inevitably be determined at their HQ and all efforts locally should be concentrated on maximising the potential benefits of the spin off option which could refocus activity at the plant on the core business of vitamin production and it’s marketing to ensure the plant’s future viability and profitability” said Mr Wilson.

“ The company have invested heavily over the years in their own waste water treatment plant as well as in the local sewerage network with a consequential and significant improvement in their environmental performance.”

“Given the competitive pressures which exist elsewhere in the market in relation to energy costs and foreign competition it is important to the company and the local community that the maximum benefit is gained from that investment in terms of improvement in both their relative competitiveness as well the environment.”

“ I will be asking my officials in the Executive to ensure that their efforts are directed in the weeks and months ahead to ensuring the company’s efforts environmentally are reflected in the charging and regulatory regimes under which they are required to operate” said Mr Wilson
