“We created the Scottish Drugs Enforcement
Agency which didn’t exist before Labour came to power and £37.4m
of drugs have been seized from Scotland’s streets including 280kg of class
A drugs such as heroin. We have also committed £100m over three years
to tackle drugs misuse in every community in Scotland, including North
Ayrshire” said Mr Wilson.
“Labour has also given new powers
to both the police and the courts to confiscate the profits made by criminals
from drug dealing and other criminal activities. The aim is to substantially
increase the £1m raised each year from confiscation orders and invest
the ill gotten gains of dealers in drug rehabilitation programmes for addicts”
said Mr Wilson.
“The Scottish Drug Court, established
on the American model at Glasgow Sheriff Court in October last year aims
to reduce drug misuse and associated offending by offering treatment based
options outside the traditional court setting.”
“All in all a comprehensive set of
measures introduced in three years and if the electorate were to grant
us an additional four year term Labour will extend the use of drug treatment
and Testing orders and the drug court system to as many sheriff courts
as practically possible,”
“We would also aim to cut drug deaths
by at least a quarter over the next five years and to increase drug seizures
by 25% by 2004” concluded Mr Wilson
