Allan Wilson MSP -
Local People Support Anti-Social Behaviour Bill - 11 November 2003
Allan
Wilson MSP for Cunninghame North has told North Ayrshire JPs that local
people supported the provisions of the Scottish Executive’s proposed
Anti-Social Behaviour Bill.
Speaking to the JPs at the annual training day at Cunninghame House in
Irvine Mr Wilson said “the outcome of my extensive consultation exercise
within the constituency demonstrated overwhelming support for the measures
in the Bill from community representatives, professionals and ordinary
constituents alike”.
“Over 1000 questionnaires were returned and their responses analysed and
over 90% of those responding indicated their complete acceptance of the
general thrust of the Governments plans to make people who damage their
communities make amends and ensure that the Police, local authorities and
the Courts have the necessary powers and appropriate disposals to deal with
offenders” said Mr Wilson.
“In only two areas was there a division of local opinion where people were
split on whether electronic tagging should be extended to under 16s and
whether social housing providers should do more to reward good tenants”.
“In the former instance people understandably wanted to know more about what
was proposed and in the latter case a clear division of opinion of the
merits of what was proposed between tenants and owner occupiers”.
“Otherwise there was near unanimity on the need for parents to take more
responsibility for their children, better regulation of licensed premises
and the extension of Anti-Social Behaviour Orders to include fixed penalty
notices for anti-social behaviour” said Mr Wilson.
The results of the survey as told to North Ayrshire JPs will be relayed to
Ministers and the Scottish Parliamentary Committee considering the Scottish
Executive’s Anti-Social Behaviour Bill published last week.
