North
Ayrshire Council is to receive £220,232 for cycling, walking and safer
streets projects from the Scottish executive.
The extra funding is intended to enable the Council to further develop and
introduce a wide variety of projects for cyclists and pedestrians including,
cycle lanes and pedestrian footpaths and crossings and traffic free
entrances to schools.
Welcoming the extra resources constituency MSP and Deputy Environment
Minister Allan Wilson said, “This extra cash will extend those benefits and
help North Ayrshire Council make our streets safer through measures such as
cycle lanes, pedestrian footpaths and safer routes to school.”
“These projects can greatly benefit local communities and make it easier for
children and local people to walk and cycle as an enjoyable and healthy way
to travel.”
“Already North Ayrshire has some of the best developed and most scenic cycle
routes in Scotland and this money will support significant new development
and build on existing provision.”
“We are committed to cutting the number of deaths and injuries on our roads
and have set a target to halve the number of children killed and seriously
injured by 2010.”
“We are on target to achieve this with a creditable 38% drop last year in
the number of children killed or seriously injured compared to the mid-1990s
level. This extra cash will build on that success and lead to safer schemes
for walking and cycling helping make North Ayrshire streets safer for our
kids” concluded Mr Wilson. |
