Executive Statement on Ardrossan Big Cat - 7th January 2003

The Scottish Executive has issued a statement advising local farmers to notify the SERAD offices in Ayr of any stock losses following sightings of an unidentified big cat in the area by police and other residents.

Deputy Minister for Rural development Allan Wilson said,

“While there have been sightings of a big cat in the vicinity there have been no tracks or other tell tale signs to identify what it might be” said Mr Wilson.

“Members of the public have therefore no reason to be alarmed but we are asking farmers to notify the Agricultural office in Ayr of any stock losses they might have suffered which could be attributable to such an animal.”

“Likewise any walker or other person who comes across wildlife such as rabbit or deer which has been killed in unusual circumstances are being advised to notify the police” said Mr Wilson.

“Strathclyde Police have established an incident control centre at their Headquarters in Pitt Street in Glasgow and they will co-ordinate the response of the relevant agencies to any future reports of sightings or other related occurrences.”

“The Scottish Executive and it’s wildlife agency Scottish Natural Heritage will co-ordinate their input via Strathclyde Police who will be the lead agency for any public enquiry.” said Mr Wilson.
