"Parliament also recognised that responsibility
for policy on this matter properly lies with HM Government
and further noted the support of our government for the wider middle east
peace process."
"Parliament, however, also extended
it's full support to our armed forces if, as a consequence of Iraqi failure
to comply, military action should prove necessary" said Mr
Wilson.
Parliament rejected the SNP notion
that war was 'inevitable' or that it was fuelled by imperialist designs on
Iraqi oil fields.
"UK forces participated in military
action in Kosova, described by Alex Salmond at the time as 'unpardonable
folly' to oppose so called ethnic cleansing and also fought in Afghanistan
where the presence of oil was not a consideration" said Mr Wilson.
" Like the prime Minister I too agree
that any action must be taken under the auspices of the UN and like most
people in Scotland I will await the deliberations of the UN in regard
to the report of the weapons inspectors prior to concluding whether military
action is necessary to enforce the UN's
will."
