Wilson Announces New Funding For North Ayrshire Council - 17th December 2003

Allan Wilson, Minister for the Environment and local Labour MSP has announced £315,000 additional funding for North Ayrshire Council as part of a £3.9m package for cleaning up derelict and contaminated that is causing public health risks or blighting communities.

“The additional funding shows the Executive’s commitment to the  ‘environmental justice agenda’ introduced by First Minister Jack McConnell to remove health risks, address dereliction and remove barriers to regeneration brought about by a history of industrial pollution and decay” said Mr Wilson.

“In North Ayrshire in the first instance, Fastrack Funding which we introduced in June means releasing sufficient additional resources for the redemption of the Ailsa Road/High Road site in Saltcoats”

“The area is an informal play area for the locale and urgently required redemption both in the interests of public safety and amenity and this financial allocation will allow the Council to adequately address the community issues which have been raised through dereliction and collapse on this site” said Mr Wilson.

Editors Note;

This will involve making the wider area safe for hand push mowers for maintenance and re-constructing the footpath link between the neighbouring houses and local amenities. In addition, the affected houses will require to be grouted. The new reinforced footpath would be constructed along a similar line to the present, but modified at the north to splay to serve the housing in both directions. This will replace the informal path across the site. The remaining area would be fenced off and be suitable only for soiling and seeding for amenity purposes.
