Saltcoats to St Andrews: Free National Bus Travel For Pensioners to be Introduced by Scottish Labour - 11th February 2003

Scottish Labour has pledged to extend the successful free local bus scheme nationwide if returned to power after the Scottish elections.  The local scheme has been hugely popular with pensioners and extending it to a national scheme is the next logical step.

Labour’s Allan Wilson  said:

“Free local off peak bus travel for all pensioners has been one of our best achievements in the Scottish Parliament. Having seen the real difference it has made to people’s lives in Strathclyde, we believe the right thing to do is to extend the scheme to allow free travel right across the country. I’m sure it will be welcomed by every older person in North Ayrshire and beyond.”

“The travel scheme is just one example of what the Scottish Parliament has achieved for our older people.  In four short years the Scottish Parliament has laid real foundations.  We have introduced a number of measures to make life easier for older people; free personal care; free local bus travel and a programme for installing central heating.  We have achieved a lot but we know there is a lot more to do.”
