Labour Wins in
Cunninghame North Euro Elections - 14th June 2004
"Allan
Wilson MSP tempered his satisfaction that Labour had 'won' in Cunninghame
North with disappointment that more people did not vote.
"It's very gratifying that Labour should have retained it's dominant
position in this constituency increasing its lead over rival parties in the
process but it is disappointing that there should have been such a low
turnout." said Mr Wilson.
"It is now equally clear that with the Tories once more in second place the
next Parliamentary election will be a two horse race between Labour and the
Conservatives over who governs Britain. It will be very important therefore
that very many more people vote then than did last week "
"The Nationalists are split from head to toe locally and nationally as
evidenced by Mr Campbell Martin's recent support for the SSP over Iraq. No
matter your position on that war very few would support Mr Martin's or the
SSP's contention that British troops should withdraw immediately with all
that that would entail for the long suffering Iraqi people and their
fledgling democracy. Certainly, only a handful of MSP’s voted with that
proposition" said Mr Wilson.
"I am quite sure in particular that no one among Mr Martin's erstwhile
supporters in the local SNP in Largs or Cumbrae share his enthusiasm for his
new "friends in the SSP" or their vision of "an independent Socialist" state
in Scotland. Or do they?" asked Mr Wilson.
