Allan
Wilson MSP has added his support to a recent Scottish Parliament debate on
Citizen Advice Week, a week aimed at promoting the work and benefits of the
Citizen’s Advice Bureaux. The debate, held on the 15th September, served to
highlight the sterling work being carried out by CAB’s throughout Scotland
in areas such as North Ayrshire.
During the debate it was pointed out that Scotland’s 77 CABs handled over
400,000 issues and secured an astonishing £26M for clients.
It has two core functions. Citizen Advice Scotland has two core aims.
Firstly, to advise and inform people in order to ensure that they have the
fullest possible knowledge of their rights and responsibilities, and of the
services which are available to them. And, secondly, to secure change by
influencing the development of social policy and public services, both
locally and nationally. This work helps to improve laws, rules and
regulations, making services more responsive and effective to people’s
needs.
Allan Wilson MSP said:
“I am delighted to be able to give my public support to this motion. Good
quality advice is increasingly necessary in today’s society and CAB is at
the forefront of advice provision. The CABs in North Ayrshire typify the
hard work and commitment of the organisation nationally. Its mixture of paid
staff and volunteers provide a unique service to local people. Clients are
afforded free, impartial advice on a strictly confidential basis –in essence
it provides support and assistance for some of the most vulnerable in our
society. These CABs are vital assets and complement the work I do in this
Constituency to promote the rights of citizens over faceless bureaucracy and
officialdom.”
