A plea for the demolition of a former Dye Works in the centre of Kilbirnie
by local MSP Allan Wilson has received the support of Strathclyde Police.
Allan Wilson has written to North Ayrshire Council calling for the
demolition of Laxton Crawford’s factory in Muirend Street following
complaints from local residents.
“The derelict state of the building acts as a
magnet for local youngsters and I have been inundated with reports of
vandalism, fire-raising and noise nuisance emanating from these premises,”
said Mr Wilson.
“The solution is clearly to demolish the existing superstructure to make it
safe and suitable for development.
I understand there is interest in the site which is being marketed for
housing in what is a prime town centre location in an area of substantial
regeneration,” said Mr Wilson.
“My great concern in the interim is that there will be a fatality unless
remedial action is taken as there have been a couple of accidents already,”
said Mr Wilson.
The MSP was backed by Inspector Kenneth McLachlan of Strathclyde Police who
has written to Mr Wilson supporting his view.
“I agree with Mr Wilson’s observations to the Chief Executive of North
Ayrshire Council and I fully support his view that the only viable solution
to this dangerous problem is demolition of the building’s remains,” said
Inspector McLachlan.
“In the meantime my staff will, subject to other policing requirements and
safety considerations give the area extra attention,”
“However the sprawling nature of the site its lack of security fencing and
overall state of decay leads me to believe that efforts by the police will
meet with limited success and I hope Mr Wilson’s approach to the council
will meet with success,” said Inspector McLachlan.
