Cunninghame North
Constituency MSP Allan Wilson - Skelmorlie Conservation Area Under Review -
4th October 2004
North
Ayrshire Council have responded positively to representations from
Cunninghame North constituency MSP Allan Wilson to support an extension to
the boundaries of the existing Skelmorlie Conservation area.
“I wrote to the Council following representations to me from concerned
residents that developments outside the existing conservation area were
being approved which were liable to detract from Skelmorlie’s traditional
red sandstone villa townscape” said Mr Wilson.
“The Council have now replied that The North Ayrshire Local Plan (excluding
Arran) contains a policy to commence a programme of Conservation Area
appraisals and that Skelmorlie is the next priority” said Mr Wilson.
“That process has now commenced and the appraisal will include an assessment
of the boundaries of the existing Conservation area with any change subject
to formal
re-designation procedures.”
“In that context I had asked the Council to contact Historic Scotland and I
understand they have recently carried out a re-survey of buildings of
historic interest in Skelmorlie village which is nearing completion and
recommends the ‘listing’ of a further eleven buildings.”
“Historic Scotland also suggest that the Conservation area is extended to
take in other streets on which a large number of Victorian villas are
situated, especially along Eglinton Terrace and the southern half of The
Lane and Seton Terrace” said Mr Wilson.
“My constituents and I will now however have the opportunity to argue that
the Conservation area also be extended along Shore road as any change to the
Boundaries will be subject to consultation said Mr Wilson
