Garnock Valley First in Kerbside Collection Campaign - 9th February 2004

Valley householders are to be the first residents of North Ayrshire to be
encouraged to recycle more of their waste as part of a campaign launched by
Environment Minister and local MSP Allan Wilson.
“North Ayrshire Council has received over £2million funding from the
Scottish Executive to expand its existing green waste collection service,”
said Mr Wilson.
“A black box for glass and a blue sack for paper will be distributed to
residents in the Garnock Valley in March and rolled out to other areas later
and I hope that local people will use the new service to further increase
recycling rates in North Ayrshire” said Mr Wilson.
“Last weeks Audit Commission report showed that North Ayrshire Council made
rapid progress last year, doubling their recycling rate from just under 6%
to more than 12% and these additional measures will help the Council achieve
it’s target rate of 25% by 2006” said Mr Wilson.
“The Scottish Executive is investing massively to help put in place the
infrastructure for more sustainable waste management. We are committed to
reducing reliance on landfill and reclaiming and recycling more of our
valuable resources to meet our Scotland wide target”
“The development of the Waste Aware North Ayrshire Campaign is an excellent
example of how Local Authorities and central Government can work together to
transform Scotland’s over reliance on landfill and poor record on recycling
and encourage local communities to participate in that progression” said Mr
Wilson.
“Extremely encouraging progress is being made across North Ayrshire in
raising public awareness and changing attitudes and behaviour towards
domestic waste management.”
“Introducing further kerbside collection for glass and paper will mean more
people can participate in recycling activity and make their own contribution
towards building a more sustainable Scotland” concluded Mr Wilson.
