Allan Wilson Reply's to Debate on Funding Boost for North Ayrshire Learning Links - 16th May 2005

New Investment Will Help School Pupils From North Ayrshire Learn New Skills
North Ayrshire Schools and colleges encouraged to work together following a £41.5 million investment.

Schools and colleges in North Ayrshire will be encouraged to work together following a £41.5 million investment by the Scottish Executive in schools-college partnerships across Scotland.

The funding is part of the Scottish Executive’s new strategy Lifelong Partners and Enterprise & Lifelong Learning Minister and local MSP Allan Wilson believes that the new investment will help school pupils from North Ayrshire learn new skills, while helping provide a clearer route to employment.

Replying to the debate on the issue in the Scottish Parliament, Allan Wilson said,

“We all know the benefits that pupils derive from the learning opportunities offered by colleges, and I think that everyone in the chamber genuinely wants to increase and further enhance those opportunities for pupils across Scotland. They are opportunities that give pupils valuable vocational skills that will help to grow Scotland's economy. “

Following the debate Allan Wilson said:
“The Labour-led Executive is transforming our education system in North Ayrshire and across the country. We are investing nearly £4billion to ensure that hundreds of schools are either rebuilt or refurbished to the highest standard including many here in North Ayrshire. But more than that Labour is also modernising the school curriculum, offering more choice to pupils in what they study and helping ensure that every child can reach their full potential.”

“That is why this new funding is so important. It will ensure that local schools work together with local colleges. It will provide real choice for hundreds of children, allowing them to learn new skills and also promoting the idea of lifelong learning.”

"Partnerships between local schools and colleges like James Watt can offer opportunities - either through pupils going to college or with lecturers coming into school. Some pupils already reap the extra benefits of college courses, thanks to local partnership arrangements. This strategy means more pupils will be able to benefit even more.”
