Allan Wilson Welcomes Launch of New Website "Project Scotland" -
17th May 2005

Volunteer to Make A Difference
Project Scotland will give our young people more choices, more opportunities to succeed.

A new scheme designed to encourage young people into volunteering has been formally launched by First Minister, Jack McConnell. Project Scotland has also received the backing of Allan Wilson MSP, who hopes that young people from North Ayrshire will visit the new web-site www.projectscotland.co.uk and sign up.

The scheme, which is inspired by the successful Americorps scheme from the United States, is expected to bring thousands more 16 to 25 year olds into volunteering activity, offering a certificated system which will help boost their future employment prospects.

Welcoming the launch of the site Allan Wilson MSP said:
“Project Scotland offers young people in North Ayrshire a wonderful opportunity and I hope that they will visit the new web-site www.projectscotland.co.uk to see what is on offer.”

“I’m sure the scheme can be of benefit to both Cunninghame North and Scotland as a whole. Over a quarter of Scots volunteer on a regular basis, the highest rate in the UK, however while many youngsters wish to do something for their community there is often no obvious path in which to do so.”

“This initiative will change that and offer youngsters the chance to reach their fullest potential. It will offer high quality placements as well as improving future prospects for employment or study. The scheme will be open to all youngsters aged 16 to 25 and I am certain that many young people from here will be keen to benefit from it.”

First Minister, Jack McConnell, stated the initiative has ‘almost limitless’ potential.
He stated:
“Project Scotland will give our young people more choices, more opportunities to succeed. It will mean that Scotland will lead the UK in youth volunteering. It will mean that taking time out to help others can become a choice for all our young people – not just those who can afford it. Project Scotland is a special chance for our country to show what kind of place Scotland wants to be. ”
