Putting the Brakes
on Boy Racers
New powers under the
Antisocial Behaviour Act crack down on boy racers.
New
powers gained under the Antisocial Behaviour Act can now be used by
Strathclyde Police to crack down on boy racers.
From this week the police have the power to seize any vehicle being driven
in a careless and inconsiderate fashion, or in a way which is likely to
cause alarm or distress. Allan Wilson MSP believes that the new powers can
be used to tackle the problems caused by boy racers in Saltcoats.
Allan Wilson MSP said:
“I am delighted that another important measure has been introduced to help
tackle antisocial behaviour. Irresponsible and careless driving endangers
not just drivers, but passengers and innocent pedestrians. The new
regulations will help protect law abiding citizens from having to put up
with disruptive and often threatening activity that blights their everyday
lives.
“I know that the vast majority of decent people in South Beach will welcome
these new regulations, which are sending a clear and firm message that this
type of behaviour is unacceptable and will be stopped. Those constituents
who have approached me on the subject can also be assured that I will
continue to work with North Ayrshire Council and Saltcoats Police in
standing up to anti social behaviour and in turn helping make Saltcoats
safer.”
Deputy Justice Minister Hugh Henry added:
"Too many communities have had to suffer the problem of cars and motorbikes
racing against each other, and away from roads, quad bikes being raced
through fields and other public places. Apart from the noise, the danger to
bystanders and those taking part is obvious. Its time to end these
antisocial 'car wars'. That is why we have given the police powers to seize
the vehicles which are causing misery - more powers to tackle one of the
sources of antisocial behaviour.”
