THE Holyrood parliament was the venue for a farmers' market recently,
marking the finale of
Scottish Food Fortnight.
The event was the first of its kind at the new Holyrood building. Organised
by the Scottish
Countryside Alliance Educational Trust (SCAET), it brought together
top-quality producers from all over Scotland to showcase the fantastic
quality and diversity of Scottish produce. Also present was local MSP Allan
Wilson who said,
"I was delighted to attend the Holyrood farmers' market and see the superb
quality of Scottish food on display. Scotland's food and drink are among our
greatest national assets and it is vital that we promote it for the benefit
of our economy, our culture and our health."
"I am a great supporter of farmers markets more generally and believe they
contribute substantially to a vibrant and growing rural economy which
continues to be of considerable importance to North Ayrshire and Arran's
economy more generally" said Mr Wilson.
Tony Andrews, Chairman of the Scottish Countryside Alliance Educational
Trust, said: "This was a great opportunity for MSP's to sample the best of
Scotland's produce and to see what the Scottish countryside has to offer. We
want to reconnect Scotland with her countryside, and what better way to do
that than to promote local food. By eating local food you can eat more
healthily, reduce food miles and support rural businesses."
Lady Claire Macdonald, on closing Scottish Food Fortnight, highlighted that
whilst Scottish Food Fortnight is a necessary awareness-raising campaign,
everyone should be encouraged to promote and use wonderful Scottish produce
for all 52 weeks of the year.
Stallholders at the Holyrood event included local companies;
Creelers Seafood Restaurants,
Arran Threepwood Fayre,
Hand-Made Confectionery, of Beith
Island Cheese Company,
Arran Scottish Food Fortnight is a national campaign of local events all
