New legislation to
help protect children
from sexual predators
This Bill
will strengthen the law and help protect Scottish
children from harm.
New
legislation to help protect children from sexual predators has received the
backing of Allan Wilson MSP. The new laws will help tackle the sexual
‘grooming’ of children and introduce Sexual Harm Orders to restrict the
activities of individuals suspected of being a danger to children.
As the Protection of Children and Prevention of Sexual Offences Bill was
passed by the Scottish Parliament the Labour MSP for Cunninghame North also
urged parents to visit the Scottish Executive’s website www.chatsafer.co.uk
to help ensure that children are safe on-line.
Allan Wilson said “This Bill will strengthen the law and help protect
Scottish children from harm. The grooming of children, including through the
use of the internet, is an area of great public concern. I’m glad the
Scottish Executive have moved to enhance protection of Scottish children.
Internet use is increasing all the time, and indeed many children are better
versed in its use than their parents. It’s therefore clear that we need to
bring the law up to date, close the loopholes and send a clear message on
this issue.”
Urging parents to take action to minimise the risk of using the internet
Allan Wilson added “Both parents and children need to be aware of the
potential risks of using the internet. A few simple rules can help keep
young people safe online and I would encourage all parents to visit
www.chatsafer.co.uk.”
