Island School Meals 'the healthy option" says MSP
Scotland's drive to improve school meals is giving primary pupils on Arran
healthier choices than ever according to nutrition experts. The school
inspectorate's interim report on the quality of school meals was published
today and local MSP Allan Wilson said it shows healthy school meals are
changing children's lifestyles for the better.
Mr Wilson said:
"Nutrition associate assessors from Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Education
visited 39 schools across Scotland, including Corrie Primary and Whiting Bay
Primary on the island, to monitor how the Executive's Hungry for Success
initiative to make school meals healthier was rolling out.
The progress report found that Hungry for Success was having a positive
impact in dining rooms across the island and local schools were making good
progress in implementing the scheme's recommendations to improve school
meals and other aspects of food in schools."
"Hungry for Success is off to a strong start and is turning around island
children's eating habits with the strong support of parents and teachers."
"Island primaries have been following the new nutritional standards since
December and already young people are enjoying, and reaping the benefits of
healthier meals. The quality of food on offer has improved and there are
more healthy choices than ever." said Mr Wilson.
"Schools and North Ayrshire Council are working hard to involve parents and
children in the process to develop new healthy eating habits that will last
a lifetime and this momentum must be maintained to ensure that more and more
young people enjoy the benefits that a healthy lifestyle brings. We are
already leading the way in the UK, but we're determined to do more such as
sourcing more local produce. That's why we will consult soon on future plans
to ensure that we build on this strong foundation of healthy living."
