Allan Wilson MSP Hit Out at Tories and SNP Failing to Support Free Travel for Older People - 4th March 2005

This Bill offers a real opportunity to improve public transport across Scotland

Allan Wilson MSP has hit out at both the SNP and Conservative’s for failing to support the Transport Bill in the Scottish Parliament this week.

The Bill includes provisions to provide all older and disabled people with free nationwide bus travel and the Cunninghame North MSP has blasted the opposition parties for their failure to back the legislation.

Following the vote on the Bill, Allan Wilson said:

“This Bill offers a real opportunity to improve public transport across Scotland, including the delivery of Labour’s commitment to provide nationwide concessionary travel to the elderly and disabled people. The vote at Stage 1 asks only for support of the general principles of the Bill, and that is why I am shocked that the Tories and SNP could not support the Bill at this point.”

“I recognise that there is still much work to do on this piece of legislation and I will certainly be pushing the Scottish Executive and working with my colleagues on the Local Government & Transport Committee to focus on the areas of concern. However, I am confident that we can address these issues and I see absolutely no reason why the SNP and Tories should seek to jeopardise the extension of concessionary fares. I am sure older people up and down Scotland will be totally dismayed at the opposition’s stance on this matter.”
