Every child in this
area deserves support
to stay on in education.
Evidence
shows that children who continue their education past 16 learn more and earn
more, with increased
employment opportunities in later life.

Allan Wilson MSP is calling for students in local schools, to make sure
they apply for the new educational
maintenance allowance recently launched by the Scottish Executive. The
education maintenance allowance will
offer students from families with an income of less than £30,000 a year a
payment of between £10 and £30 a
week to help them stay on in school.

"Too many children drop-out of school at 16, when they so obviously have the
potential to carry on with their education. That’s a huge waste of talent
and ability and this initiative is an opportunity to improve life chances
for our young people and ensure that they get the encouragement and support
they deserve.
"The new education maintenance allowance will help children in North
Ayrshire stay on at 16-19 year olds who stay on in education either at
school or in college. If your family income is less than £30,000, pupils
could be eligible for up to £30 a week for the next two years for staying in
education and showing progress.
"I want every eligible family in Cunninghame North to apply. Most pupils
will have already received forms from their schools. However, if you have
not received any details and you believe you or your child could benefit
from EMAs please get in touch with my office."
The amount students are eligible for is based on family income.
Up to £19,630 per annum £30
£19,631 to £24,030 per annum £20
£24,031 to £30,000 per annum £10
