I always think the most important message at this time of year is that we

I always think the most important message at this time of year is that we
consider the needs of the frail elderly in our communities and that’s why I
have produced a free guide this year to all the benefits and assistance
available to elderly citizens in order that no one misses out on their
entitlements. *
The year past was a momentous one marked by the G8 meeting to agree an
historic aid package for Africa here in Scotland and the unstinting
generosity of Scots in responding to international appeals for the victims
of the Asian tsunami, the Kashmiri earthquake and African poverty and
illness.
The renewal of Scotland’s historic relationship with Malawi demonstrates
that in our own way, devolved Scotland can assist in relieving poverty in
one small part of Africa.
In my own Ministerial portfolio the Scottish economy has seen annualised
growth at its highest for 4 years.
There are more people in work than ever before and our employment statistics
are the best in the UK. Our record on youth employment is the best in the
developed world.
There is still more to do however and in the New Year I intend to put in
place plans to make sure all 16-19 year olds in North Ayrshire can access
opportunities to enter training, further education or employment when they
leave school.
A happy and prosperous new year to all the Herald’s many readers.
