start-up costs for sustainable projects that encourage home reading. Staff
costs, travel and subsistence are not funded. To be successful, applicants
must demonstrate the sustainability of their scheme.
The scheme has already awarded £1.6 million for innovative proposals which
bring parents, carers and young people together to read.
The Labour MSP said:
“We know that children who enjoy reading at home have a big head start in
the classroom.
“Parents and carers play a critical role in getting children enthusiastic
about reading. The funding available could support parents or community
groups to set up initiatives like a book bag club, or lending library which
will ultimately encourage reading at home.”
