New Bill
proposes strict new measures to crack down on crime and violence.
The Police Bill is a very important piece of
legislation and I am in no doubt it will make a real difference to the
residents and communities of this area.
Plans
to introduce tough new laws to support local police in creating safer
streets and communities, have
received the backing of Cunninghame North MSP Allan Wilson in the Scottish
Parliament .
The Police, Public Order and Criminal Justice (Scotland) Bill proposes
strict new measures to crack down on
knife crime, such as doubling the maximum penalty for carrying a knife in
public from two to four years.
It will also:
Introduce football banning orders to tackle violence, sectarianism, racism
or hatred improve the organisation of marches and parades introduce
mandatory drug testing and referral, upon arrest, for anyone aged 16 or over
suspected of a drugs or drugs-related offence (including theft)
Mr Wilson said:
“The Police Bill is a very important piece of legislation and I am in no
doubt it will make a real difference to the residents and communities of
this area.
“We have already seen instances and complaints of sectarian behaviour in
North Ayrshire and these new measures will better equip the police to crack
down on the perpetrators of such acts of sectarianism.”
“We already have record numbers of police on our street, but we need to make
sure they have the tools they need to make our streets safer. Police will be
given a range of new powers to use in their day to day work, such as the
unconditional power of arrest if they suspect someone has been carrying a
knife or the introduction of football banning orders to tackle violence,
sectarianism, racism or hatred.”
The Police, Public Order and Criminal Justice (Scotland) Bill was passed at
stage 1 of its process and is expected to be debated and further powers
proposed at stage 2 in the coming weeks.
