North Ayrshire Council has given the green-light to outline development
principles for a major regeneration project at Lochshore, Glengarnock.
The Lochshore Development Framework was formally approved, in principle, by
the Council at a meeting earlier this week.
Plans are underway to breathe new life into the area and Scottish Enterprise
Ayrshire, North Ayrshire Council and a number of other partners have
prepared an ambitious master plan that aims to regenerate the area and
incorporates a number of residential, business, transport, leisure and
community developments.
Evelyn McCann, Chief Executive of Scottish Enterprise Ayrshire, said: “We
welcome the news that North Ayrshire Council has approved the Lochshore
Development Framework in principle. It is a significant project for North
Ayrshire, and indeed the west of Scotland, and we are one step closer to the
vision being realised.
“However, we are still in the early stages of the process and Scottish
Enterprise Ayrshire and its partners recognise that there is still much work
to be done. We are all committed to delivering this challenging and exciting
project to further grow Ayrshire’s economy.”
The next step is to formally engage with the private sector to establish
their willingness to invest in this development opportunity.
Allan Wilson, MSP for Cunninghame North said: “This is extremely good news
and long overdue for the future of the Valley.
As a local resident, I know what a good place this is to live and these
plans will make it better."
Councillor David O’Neill, leader, North Ayrshire Council, said: “This s a
big step forward for the area. It is in keeping with the Council’s
determination to adopt and drive forward regeneration projects throughout
North Ayrshire so we are only too delighted to give the general principles
in the development framework our formal approval.
“I look forward to working with our partners, Scottish Enterprise Ayrshire,
and we as a Council will do all we can to encourage private partners to come
in and flesh out the details of the development. It will offer benefits to
the local community and make its mark on the area’s wider economy.”
Local councillor John Bell said: “At last things are beginning to move
forward in bringing this site back into public use.
“The local enterprise company now have to find a private sector partner to
firm up the proposals, but the good news for the area is that a Kilbirnie
and Glengarnock Improvement Fund will be established to fund environmental
projects supporting and sustaining the town centre and other community
facilities”.
