13%
reduction in crime in North Ayrshire over the last twelve months.
These statistics demonstrate that the increased
investment by the Scottish Executive in a more visible police presence on
our streets is helping to make them safer.

Strathclyde Police have
reported a 13% reduction in crime in North Ayrshire over the last twelve
months and this fall has been welcomed by local Labour MSP Allan Wilson.
“ ‘U’ division headquarters report that daily crime in North Ayrshire
averaged 30 per day for the year 2001-2002 whereas as at the end of January
this year the average daily crime count was down to 24” said Mr Wilson.
“ These statistics demonstrate that the increased investment by the Scottish
Executive in a more visible police presence on our streets is helping to
make them safer and will, I know be welcomed by my constituents as well”
said Mr Wilson.
“Reducing crime by 13% while at the same time increasing the detection rate
from 46% to 55% of all crime reported to the police means that, not only is
the record number of police on our streets having a deterrent effect on
crime as it was intended to do, but that more criminals are being caught and
punished, leading to further reductions in the crime rate” said Mr Wilson.
“The good news for the public and the bad news for criminals is that the
civilianisation process underway in the police service, whereby posts which
do not require a uniformed police officer are replaced by civilians,
releasing uniformed officers for front line policing duties, will increase
police numbers by a further 52 this year” said Mr Wilson.
“This process will continue next year as well when it is expected a further
60 such posts will be created further enhancing the visible police presence
on our streets, deterring crime and making them safer for law abiding
citizens” concluded Mr Wilson.
