Local MSP Allan Wilson is
backing an environmental initiative by Tesco to re-use plastic carrier bags
at their Kilbirnie store. Customers with Tesco Clubcards are rewarded with
additional points every time they re-use carrier bags instead of using new
ones.
Following a visit to the store to discuss the scheme with staff and
customers, Mr Wilson said, “We need to get people thinking about how we can
protect the world for our children and grandchildren. Re-cycling schemes of
this nature are a valuable way of raising awareness of the need to reduce
our resource use and dispose of less waste to landfill.”
“I was encouraged that since the initiative started in mid-August, customers
have re-used 37,271 carrier bags, recycling 4005 last week alone. The
company have a target to effect a reduction in plastic bag usage of 25% and
are well on their way to reaching their objective at the Kilbirnie store.”
said Mr Wilson.
“Tesco have also switched, like other supermarkets such as the CO-OP , to
using biodegradable bags which are less harmful to the environment and this
change is also to be welcomed. we can all do our bit to re-use and re-cycle
and it’s important big companies like supermarkets set a good example” said
Mr Wilson.
“ I am also anxious to extend Tesco’s existing links with the community and
hope to encourage further co-operation with local schools through the
Scottish Executive’s ‘ Determined to Succeed ‘ campaign and with local
sports clubs through Tesco’s Community Development Programme.” said Mr
Wilson.
“The Executive's 'Its Our Future' campaign also aims to encourage more
people, especially parents and children, to think now about the steps we can
all take to live within our environmental means. The campaign will highlight
how even simple changes, like recycling and switching off things when they
are not in use, can make a real difference to our environment for the
future.”
Tesco Store Manager Murdo MacKenzie said,
“Our ambition is to support local communities and this is part of that
process. Tesco wants to reduce it’s energy use costs as well as it’s
environmental impact and this scheme assists in that objective.
Everyone’s a winner.”
