Labour Party Suspicious About The Way Public Consultation Was Handled.
They also criticise the proposal that there should
only be one hour parking in the town.
Allan
Wilson MSP is backing Largs Labour Party in a complaint to North Ayrshire
Council about the way in which public consultation over the Largs Traffic
Management Scheme was handled.
He said there was a strong local feeling that the end result of the plans,
as currently proposed, would be the loss of land on Largs seafront to
parking - a scheme that was rejected by the people of Largs when it was last
raised several years ago.
Mr Wilson said: "The best way to avoid suspicions about motives and any
misapprehensions that may arise is to have a genuine, open consultation
process and there is a feeling in this case - certainly among local Labour
Party members - that this has not happened".
The local Labour Party has expressed concern that the plans for the Traffic
Management Scheme were put into Moorburn over the schools half-term holiday
when many people were likely to be away. They also said there had been
confusion over the "optional car parking plans" being mixed up with other
plans.
They also criticise the proposal that there should only be one hour parking
in the town. Mr Wilson said: "Most community events, such as church
meetings, last for more than an hour. It is unreasonable if local people are
going to be effectively banned from taking their cars into their own town
centre for such gatherings".
The Labour Party also voiced concerns that traffic congestion in some parts
of the town will actually be worsened by the proposals which include the
closing off of Waterside Street to traffic with it being directed up
Gateside Street which is already heavily congested.
Mr Wilson said: "These issues can only be thrashed out through direct
discussion and perhaps the best way forward is to have a public meeting at
which all the relevant concerns can be expressed. In the meantime, I have
asked North Ayrshire Council to take further steps to ensure that the plans
are as widely publicised as possible since this really is an issue that
affects people's daily lives, as well as the economic well-being of Largs".
