Plans to
Include Millport as Prospective
Location For VesCo.
10 new posts will be created by VesCo if it were
successful in securing the new company's
headquarters for the island.
Allan
Wilson MSP has backed plans to include Millport in the shortlist of
prospective locations for the proposed Clyde and Hebrides vessel owning
company VesCo.
"As part of the exercise to restructure CalMac prior to the tendering of
ferry services, two
companies will be created, VesCo and OpsCo the service operating company"
said Mr Wilson.
"Both organisations will be owned by Scottish Ministers and OpsCo will
retain the existing CalMac staff and continue to be located at the existing
CalMac Headquarters in Gourock. The VesCo will be a new body, however, with
responsibility for the assets, vessels, piers and harbours, buildings etc."
" In the interests of transparency in the tendering exercise and in order to
ensure a level playing field for all prospective bidders it will be
necessary for VesCo to locate its staff in office accommodation separate
from the existing CalMac Headquarters in Gourock and Millport is to be
considered together with other locations in North Ayrshire, Inverclyde, West
Dunbartonshire and Argyll and Bute." said Mr Wilson.
"We expect that approximately 10 new posts will be created by VesCo if it
were successful in securing the new company's headquarters for the island"
"The next stage in the process will involve an assessment of those high
priority communities identified by the local authorities concerned. A review
team will work closely with the four councils and with local enterprise
companies, who will provide information and identify the support available
to recruit and train a potential labour force as part of the second stage
relocation review" said Mr Wilson.
"Hopefully that process will conclude with a decision to relocate in this
part of the Clyde" said Mr Wilson
