Cunninghame
North MSP, Allan Wilson, has condemned the activities of the independent
MSP, Campbell Martin, over the North Ayrshire schools programme and has
suggested that it is Mr Martin who should be investigated - "for wasting
police time".
During a short debate on the subject in the Scottish Parliament, Mr Wilson
said that anyone was entitled to a view and to criticise. But, he continued:
"When misrepresentation, innuendo, personal attacks and downright untruths
substitute for argument, I believe the line has been crossed beyond which no
credibility can be given to Mr Campbell Martin's comments".
He also pointed out that - in direct contradiction of claims made by its
opponents - Sportscotand has supported the Laighdykes scheme on the grounds
that it will "significantly improve the provision of facilities in the Three
Towns". He said that PPP was one of the best things to have happened in
North Ayrshire and had already provided the James Watt College
"which Mr Martin opposed".
Afterwards, Mr Wilson said that Mr Martin's conduct in calling for a police
investigation into the North Ayrshire schools PPP was "disgraceful."
" Since there is not a shred of evidence to support his allegations, which
are based entirely on political malice, this has been a straightforward
waste of police time. I believe that the police have many better things to
do than pursue Campbell Martin's conspiracy theories, but given that he is
an elected representative, they could not refuse to do so. If, as I fully
expect, the detailed assessment of the material provided by Mr Martin by the
police completely rejects Mr Martin's allegations, he should offer a full
apology and expect to be investigated himself for wasting police time;
" I particularly object to Mr Martin's willingness to smear the reputations
of decent public servants with innuendoes and allegations of corruption, and
to use the totally spurious device of claiming that
"the police are
investigating" in
order to give a veneer of respectability to his smears. Once the police have
investigated and produced their conclusions, Mr Martin will no longer be
able to hide behind that form of words and he will be exposed for the
complete charlatan that he undoubtedly is."
