The plans
would be counter productive and do not reflect the needs and views of
thousands of
Cunninghame North parents.
If Labour is re-elected in May we will give a firm
commitment to local parents that P1 and the
school starting age of 5 will be retained.

Local Labour MSP Allan
Wilson has hit out at plans revealed by the Liberal Democrats to abolish P1
and raise the school starting age from 5 to 6.
The Cunninghame North MSP said the plans would be counter productive and do
not reflect the needs and views of thousands of Cunninghame North parents.
Speaking about the plans, Allan Wilson MSP said: “The Scottish education
system is one of the strongest in the world and our children are amongst the
best performing in maths, literacy and science. Liberal Democrat plans to
scrap P1 and raise the school starting age from 5 to 6 make no sense.
“Labour is listening to the views of parents and they are telling us that
after two years of nursery education, their children are ready to go to
school.
“If Labour is re-elected in May we will give a firm commitment to local
parents that P1 and the school starting age of 5 will be retained. We will
also commit to go further in the next four years to improve the transition
from nursery to primary and give infants the best start in school possible.”
