The proposed demolition of
the derelict Laxton Crawford Mill in Kilbirnie and its replacement by 44 new
homes to be built by Cruden Estates Ltd has been welcomed by local MSP Allan
Wilson.
Speaking after the decision by North Ayrshire Council to grant planning
permission for the development Mr Wilson said,
" I have campaigned long and hard for the demolition of the former Mill ever
since it fell into a state of disrepair following its closure as a working
dye works. The building acted as a magnet for local youngsters, particularly
during the summer months and was a constant source of nuisance to the police
and local residents."
"It was only a matter of time before some more foolhardy youngster was
seriously injured or the vandalism and fire-raising escalated into something
more serious. The news that the building will now be demolished and replaced
by a modern housing development is therefore to be welcomed" said Mr Wilson.
"It is also good news for the ongoing regeneration of Kilbirnie and it's
town centre. Property values are on the up and the town is an increasingly
popular place to live and bring up families. The proposed Regeneration plan
being promoted by Scottish Enterprise Ayrshire, North Ayrshire Council and a
number of other partners involves an ambitious proposal to regenerate the
area and incorporates a number of residential, business, transport, leisure
and community developments."
"It is a significant project and long overdue for the future of the Valley.
I want to encourage private partners to join the public agencies and offer
benefits to the local community through the wider economic regeneration of
the area."
"A Kilbirnie and Glengarnock Improvement Fund will be established to fund
environmental projects supporting and sustaining the town centre and other
community facilities and this latest investment by the private sector
demonstrates a willingness on their part to become involved in the town's
regeneration" concluded Mr Wilson.
