Local youngsters are set to benefit from £142,033 of new funding to promote
healthy eating in local schools.
The extra money is being welcomed by local Labour MSP Allan Wilson who says
the cash means even more resources for teachers to help get the message
across that a healthy meal means a healthy lifestyle.
The cash from the Labour-led Scottish Executive can be used to buy resources
like books and DVD’s to teach pupils about healthy eating. It can also be
used by schools to put in place systems for anonymising free school meals to
increase take up.
Speaking about the extra cash, the Cunninghame North MSP said: "Thanks to
the Labour-led Executive’s Hungry for Success initiative, local youngsters
are already enjoying healthy school meals.
“The extra £142,033 will allow North Ayrshire Council to build on this work
and push ahead with educating local youngsters about the benefits of a
healthy diet.
“If we can change attitudes and habits in pupils and encourage them to
choose healthier options then they are likely to enjoy a longer and
healthier life.”
NOTES:
The £5 million is a reallocation of existing Executive resources for the
financial year 2006-2007.
